How to Spot a Fake Locksmith

Locksmith scams are common in the St. Louis area. Here are the warning signs to look for, and how to check any locksmith before you let them work on your door or car.

Warning signs

8 red flags of a locksmith scam

No real street address

Scam listings use a city name only, a P.O. box, or an address that turns out to be an empty lot or a different business. Look the address up on a map before you call.

Generic phone greeting

If the person answers "Locksmith service" instead of a business name, you may be talking to a call center that sells your job to whoever is nearby.

A low teaser price on the phone

A $15–$35 "service call" quote that grows into hundreds once the tech arrives is the most common scam. Ask for the full price range, including labor, before anyone comes out.

Drilling the lock right away

Most standard lockouts can be opened without damage. A tech who insists on drilling and replacing the lock first is often padding the bill.

Unmarked vehicle, no ID

A legitimate locksmith should show identification and a business name on paperwork, an invoice or the vehicle.

No invoice or cash only

Ask for an itemized, written invoice with the company name, address and phone number. Refusing to give one is a red flag.

Doesn't ask who you are

An honest locksmith asks for proof that you live at the home or own the vehicle before opening it.

Lookalike names and many listings

Watch for several near-identical business names sharing one phone number, or ads that change names often.

Before you call

A 5-step check for any locksmith

  1. Search the business name plus "reviews" and read real customer comments.
  2. Confirm the address on Google Maps and check that it shows a storefront.
  3. Ask for the business's legal name and the full price range before work starts.
  4. Ask the technician for ID when they arrive and compare the name to the invoice.
  5. Get an itemized written invoice and keep it.
